Lady Bulldogs upset Dogies, fall to Blazers

Posted: Wednesday, Feb 6th, 2013

Junior Tori Hageman takes aim against the Torrington Lady Blazers in Wheatland Saturday night. Hageman was one of eight girls who put points on the board.

WHEATLAND – Similar to last week, the Lady Bulldogs of Wheatland tacked on a win and a loss this past weekend.

The girls got the edge on 3A’s No. 5 Newcastle Lady Dogies 50-46 during Friday night’s road game. Newcastle (10-7 overall, 5-4 conference) sits three places above the Lady Bulldogs (6-9 overall, 4-5 conference) in the 3A East conference and Wheatland is unranked in the WyoPreps poll as of press time.

The Torrington Lady Blazers picked up their ninth win of the season against the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, 46-22. Almost half of Wheatland’s score was foul points, 10 points from five separate players.

The Lady Blazers ended the first quarter ahead by three in a low-scoring period, 8-5. The Blazers continued to expand their lead to 25-9 at the half. Wheatland tacked on seven additional points, including six unanswered, going into the third quarter still trailing 35-16.

That momentum was short-lived, though, as the Lady Blazers ultimately expanded their lead to 19 points, winning 46-27.

The Lady Bulldogs head to Buffalo once more to face the Lady Bison on Friday. The Lady Bison (11-6 overall, 4-4 conference) narrowly beat Glenrock 47-46 this past weekend. The Lady Bulldogs and Bison last faced off two weeks ago, when Wheatland won 36-32. Buffalo sits two places above Wheatland at fourth place in the 3A East.

A true test comes on Saturday as the Lady Bulldogs host the undefeated Douglas Lady Bearcats. Douglas and the Tongue River Lady Eagles are the only girls teams in the state who remain without a single season loss. The Lady Bearcats are No.1 in the 3A class, according to the most recent WyoPreps polls. Douglas takes on No. 2 Rawlins on Friday before traveling to Wheatland.
