WHEATLAND – With only three home wrestling events, the Bulldog wrestling team took to the mat last Tuesday and took advantage of the home crowd.

The Bulldog JV team went 4-0 with freshmen Josh Calvert (220) and Justus Borton (195) winning by pins and sophomore Michael Schmidl (285) winning two matches.

The varsity action started off under the lights with Tyler Jenkins (126) winning by fall in the second period. Tel Parmley (132) stayed with his ranked wrestler into the third period before losing by fall. Lance Lucas (145) dominated with a 19-3 tech fall.

Kirby Cagle (182) beat Che’ Roberts 12-8 and Jace Loyd (195) had a quick pin at 0:15. Preston Gunter (106) and Garret Ayers (120) both won by pins. Wyatt Dunlap (113) won 2-0.

In their last home match, seniors Jhett Eike, Kevin Grimes, Jed Rietz, Taylor Bush and Pierce Peasley put on a show for the home crowd. Reitz (160) won by pin in the second period. Eike (138) dominated with a third-period pin leading 16-1. Peasley (170) secured a first-period pin and finished his last home match with a win. Bush (285) went into the second overtime period with No. 2-ranked Woodrow Davidson before losing by fall. Bush returned the favor over the weekend, defeating Davidson at the conference duals.

The Bulldogs defeated Rawlins in convincing fashion 65-12 to send the seniors out with a team victory.

On Friday, the grapplers headed to Glenrock for the two-day conference duals, a perview of next month’s regional 3A East tournament. On Friday, Wheatland lost to No. 1 Douglas and defeated Glenrock. On Saturday, Wheatland beat Rawlins, Buffalo, Newcastle and narrowly lost to Torrington 36-30 to finish third place.

Coach Colt Goff was pleased with the effort and felt that the team has shown improved effort and conditioning. The team heads to Riverton Feb. 1 and 2 for the Ron Thon tournament. The Ron Thon is considered the most competitive tournament in Wyoming, featuring wrestlers from 2A, 3A and 4A.
