Bulldogs compete at Battle of the Bighorns

WORLAND - The Wheatland High School wrestling team had a very busy last week of 2012, wrestling in eight team dual matches. On Thursday, Wheatland traveled to top ranked 2-A Moorcroft. Garrett Ayers was one of few bright spots in the dual match winning by pin.

Wheatland traveled to Worland and competed in the 20-team Battle of the Bighorns dual tournament. Day one was difficult with Wheatland losing to #3 Worland, 4-A schools Billings, MT and Casper Kelly Walsh. In their final dual, Wheatland narrowly lost to Jackson 36-33. On Saturday, Wheatland went 3-0, defeating Mountain View, Thermopolis/Kemmerer and Green River/Pinedale to win their day 2 bracket.

In individual action at 106 pounds, freshman Preston Gunter lost to the #1 ranked 2A wrestler Dallas Taylor of Moorcroft 3-1 in a tight match. Gunter went 5-2 for the Worland tournament including a victory over the #6 ranked KW wrestler. Tel Parmely went 4-3 and upset #6 ranked Brayden Castagno of Jackson. Senior Jhett Eike was 6-1 and narrowly lost to #1 ranked Tanner Galey of Kelly Walsh 5-4 in 2 overtimes. Eike is the team leader in wins. Freshman Nathan Willis filled in for injured Lance Lucas and won 2 matches. Jed Rietz was 5-2 with 4 pins. Jace Loyd also went 5-2, losing a close 6-4 match to the third ranked wrestler in 4A. Lane Peasley went 5-2 including an upset over 5th ranked John Beck from Jackson 3-1. Peasley won by scoring a last second reversal at the end of the match. Michael Schmidl did well at heavyweight, finishing 5-2 with upset victories over the 6th and 7th ranked wrestlers in 2A,3A. Schmidl was the team leader with 5 pins. The Bulldogs were missing varsity members Taylor Bush, Kirby Cagle, Lance Lucas and Wyatt Dunlap due to injury.

The Bulldogs return to action Jan. 3 at Laramie.
