Creatively talented but hitting a new learning curve

Ton Winter at her new desk and position.

How’s this for a switch in lifestyles - a graduate in theater of Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. to general manager of the Platte County Record-Times.

That’s the career stretch for Ton Winter.

Add to that, pictures of her ballet students in last week’s paper. As well, husband Lincoln is the pastor of the Lutheran Church on Willow Street. He is a technical theater graduate of Concordia-River Forest. This last fall, the two were the choreographer and lighting designer respectively for Cheyenne Little Theater Players production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.” Their children were in the production.

But back to this newspaper. Through a rapid series of events, Winter has migrated from the back of the newspaper office where she laid out ads without a window and close to the bathroom door to the front where she has a heating vent overhead as well as a window.

Along with “moving up” (in this case east) at the RT comes a host of problems with which she has to deal. “I want people to know that because this paper is a weekly, it’s not reasonable for us to deal with national or state news that is timely. This is a newspaper about the community and what’s happening in it,” said Winter.

While Ton has been at the paper for nine years as a graphic artist she is still learning about editorial. “At this point I’m just trying to do my best and hope the readers will not be too angry with my flubs,” she went on to say.

There will be a new editor coming the first of January, one who also will have a bit of a culture shock - a Chicago girl - Whitney Helm.
