WHEATLAND – The signs of harvest are coming as crops start to come in, fall approaches and the fifth annual Green Harvest Festival starts later this week.
Dan Brecht of Platte County Economic Development said the festival began as a way to promote local produce and a then-struggling downtown Wheatland Main Street business sector and evolved into a celebration of local vendors and food.
“It was to bring attention to downtown,” Brecht said. “It (also) encouraged the importance of local food and agriculture.”
Brecht said the event grows steadily each year after a small start five years ago, drawing crowds to such events as the free concert, pet parade, runaway veggie contest and much more.
The year's official schedule starts on Friday evening when the 67th Army Band plays at the Brecht Band Shell in Lewis Park at 7 p.m., paying tribute to America with patriotic music. There will be free concerts at the band shell throughout the week, including performances by Jerry Barlow, the Covenant Lutheran Church Praise Band and the return of High Plains Tradition.
The Green Harvest Festival runs Friday through Sunday, Aug. 25. Brecht said the event staff would appreciate volunteers.
