PCSD No. 1, parents targeting clearer attendance policies

Posted: Wednesday, Jun 26th, 2013

WHEATLAND – Parents and school district officials are taking a new look at school attendance policies after public outcry from a recent court hearing concerning the attendance of a West Elementary School student.

Parents Brandy and Harvey Cain have been vocal about local policies since their son Brayden, 9, was placed on probation for missing more than 10 days at school.

Brandy said all but three days of Brayden’s absence this year were because of medical appointments or illness, all of which she believed to be excused.

“They were all excused by the school, so we didn’t think there was an issue,” Brandy said. “I said ‘He shouldn’t be on probation,‘(Harvey and I) should be on probation if anything.’ He’s nine; he can’t decide to go to school or not.”

Brandy said she received an initial letter in March from the school district informing the family Brayden had missed more than 10 days of school and asking to meet with the parents; the letter also said a copy of the letter would be forwarded to the Department of Family Services as well as the Platte County Attorney. Brandy mentioned two occasions when she sent Brayden to school sick after the first letter, but the school sent him home both times.
